• Rats are the most destructive mammals on earth. They consume or contaminate 20% of the world’s stored crops with hair, faeces and urine.
• Each rat sheds about 15,000 droppings, 6 litres of urine and 300,000 hairs per year, often amongst stored crops. A mouse can shed 30,000 droppings and a litre of urine per year.
• Rodents spread disease to humans and livestock. Weil’s disease is transmitted to humans by rat urine. This is a potentially fatal condition. Rats and mice can also transmit Brucellosis and Salmonella.
• Rats are prolific breeders. They are sexually mature at 10 weeks, producing 6-8 litters per year and 8-10 offspring in each litter. Females become fertile again within days of giving birth.
• Compulsive gnawing by rats and mice damages buildings and electric wires, causing 25% of farm fires.
• Rats and mice adapt to diverse conditions and can develop resistance to all kinds of toxins, including inferior poisons.
• Rats are tough. Rats can survive falling from a 50storey building. In fact they have been known to survive much worse, such as tidal waves, hurricanes and even atomic bombs.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS TO LOOK FOR?
Rats and mice are so cautions so you’re unlikely to see them, but you, will see their signs. Look for regular rat-runs between food and nest sites, visible in vegetation, and for tracks in mud or dust. Nests are found in earth banks, under rock piles, under rubbish and in compost heaps. Look for droppings – about 16 mm long and spindle-shaped. Gnaw marks will be evident around entry holes. Also look for greasy smears – rats like to press their bodies against walls as they run.
Mice leave smaller rod shaped droppings, 3 to 6 mm long. You’ll also find tracks in dusty places and evidence of gnawing.
If you see rats or mice during the day then it is a sign of a large overcrowded population searching actively for food.

The REDTOP standard is an 8 litres) re-usable fly-trap, supplied with bait.
When full, the trap is either emptied and rebaited or the bag and its contents are discarded and both the bait and bag replaced.
