Whether you are a professional herbalist, or herb enthusiast, you can connect with herbs through the Herb Association of South Africa (HAoSA). The Herb Association of South Africa has evolved over time, facilitating an impressive cultural diversity. Many of the populace still use a wide variety of herbs and plants in their daily lives; for food, shelter, fuel and medicine. We associate herbs with appetizing food, natural scents, gentle healing, peaceful gardens, beneficial crafts, intriguing history and other sacred activities.

The Herb Association of Southern Africa was founded in 1986 with the aim  to create a network for individuals from all walks of life who seek to promote the varied uses of herbs. The Association endeavours to keep abreast of the ever-changing forces in the herbal arena to ensure that it always provides its members with current and useful information about herbs.

The objectives of the Assocation are:
    * to unite all those interested in herbs,
    * to share knowledge about herbs,
    * to disseminate the most up-to-date herbal-healing facts to more people,
    * to educate others about the use of herbal medicines,
    * to educate others about good health,
    * to advocate using natural and less expensive healing remedies,
    * to promote the conservation of indigenous herbal plants,
    * to promote traditional herbal medicine,
    * to ensure proper botanical identification of herbal plants and
    * to facilitate a united pressure group for plant/natural medicines.

It is most rewarding to pick and eat your own home-grown, organic vegetables, fruit and herbs, but many gardeners are not willing, or able to dedicate the time, effort and space needed. However these gardens needn’t be very large, strictly formal or tucked away. You can easily introduce certain herbs, vegetables and fruit to flower beds or pot-planted for growing on patios and even balconies. Particular fruit could be trained as very ornamental espaliers. Kitchen gardens should be an aesthetic pleasure, yet also provide in your culinary needs.
